Learn MoreResidents of SIG Housing Trust’s Bridge House are set to benefit from improved fire safety measures as work begins on the renewal of fire doors throughout the building. The project is part of a wider effort to ensure compliance with the latest fire safety regulations and enhance tenant safety at this service.
The initiative, funded by Luton Borough Council will see the replacement of outdated fire doors with modern, high-performance alternatives designed to provide enhanced protection against fire and smoke. The new doors meet the latest British Standard (BS 476) and Building Regulations, ensuring they offer at least 30 or 60 minutes of fire resistance, depending on their location within the building.
The project was overseen by SIG Housing Trusts Chair Donald Douglas on a visit to the service in Luton. During his visit he also had time to catch up with several on the residents and get their views on what additional improvements they would like to see at the property.
Staff were on hand to provide Donald with a firsthand overview of the service and the outcomes that it achieved for the Luton area.
The renewal project comes in response to heightened fire safety awareness following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017, which led to stricter fire regulations across the UK. Local authorities and housing associations have since undertaken extensive reviews of fire safety measures in residential buildings, with particular focus on fire doors, cladding, and evacuation procedures.
Residents have been engaged over the planned works and will be provided with guidance on how to maintain their new fire doors to ensure continued safety.
Once the installations are in place Luton Borough Council have also committed to carrying out internal decoration to the communal areas of the property.
